Born and raised in Miami, Florida, to Cuban immigrant parents, Andy’s artistic journey has been shaped by his heritage, community, and a deep passion for storytelling and music.
He made his professional debut in the Tony Award-winning musical RENT as "Angel," performing on Broadway, London’s West End, and in U.S. national and international tours. His relationship with RENT extended beyond performance when he became Associate Director to Michael Greif on the show’s Off-Broadway revival. Andy later directed productions of RENT in Tokyo, Seoul, and Havana—the latter marking the first Broadway musical co-production in Cuba in over 50 years. This historic endeavor became the subject of the HBO Original Documentary Revolution Rent, which Andy directed. He also directed the RENT, 25th Anniversary documentary for New York Theatre Workshop, celebrating the legacy of this iconic musical.
Andy’s directorial work also includes celebrated productions of Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick... Boom! in Tokyo, Japan, for TOHO, and at Actors’ Playhouse in Miami. Both productions received critical acclaim for their creative staging and heartfelt celebration of Larson’s legacy.
His Broadway credits as Associate Director include On Your Feet!, the Gloria and Emilio Estefan musical directed by Jerry Mitchell, with additional productions in the Netherlands and London’s West End, and Roundabout Theatre Company’s Holiday Inn, featuring the music of Irving Berlin. Additionally, he served as Associate Director on the new musical FLY at Dallas Theater Center and La Jolla Playhouse, collaborating with Jeffrey Seller.
In Miami, Andy directed the critically acclaimed regional premiere of On Your Feet! at Actors’ Playhouse, as well as two works by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz: Tsunami and Farhad and the Secret of Being. He returned to the stage after many years as an actor, when he starred as "Dan" in the immersive production of Next to Normal in Barcelona, directed by Simon Pittman, alongside Tony Award winner Alice Ripley.
Andy is also dedicated to education, serving on the faculty of the Institute of the Arts Barcelona, where he mentors the next generation of artists. He holds a BFA in Theatre from Florida International University, which honored him with a Torch Award recognizing his distinguished achievements. He further honed his craft at The Public Theater’s Shakespeare Lab, appearing in All’s Well That Ends Well directed by Barry Edelstein. As a writer, Andy was honored to be invited by Scholastic, the world-renowned publishing and education company, to create Don’t Worry! ¡No Te Preocupes!, a bilingual story celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, featured in their Our Voices series, which champions diversity, empathy, and inclusion.
With a career spanning continents, cultures, languages and disciplines, Andy Señor Jr. continues to celebrate the transformative power of theater and storytelling, bringing diverse perspectives to the global stage while staying deeply connected to his roots.
